This year's 23rd Strings of Autumn festival in Prague's Lucerna was concluded with a brilliant performance by three New York artists from De La Soul. One of the most legendary hip-hop bands also celebrated thirty years since the release of their debut album entitled 3 Feet High and Rising in Prague. If you haven't had the chance to come see the concert, you don't need to be sad. LP-life.cz brings you a report from this musical performance.
When the support of the legendary band, Chris Dave & Drumhedz, appeared on stage shortly after eight o'clock in the evening, it was hard to imagine that in less than an hour the Lucerna Music Hall would fill up with almost two thousand visitors. Although the American band was a pleasant variegation of the beginning of the evening, people were waiting impatiently for the main stars, because of whom they had rushed to buy tickets long enough in advance.
The members of De La Soul, nicknamed Posdnuos, Trugoy and Maseo, whose real names are Kelvin Mecer, David Jude Jolicoer and Vincent Lamont Mason, totally rocked the house. With their charisma and musical performance, they were able to lift even the older ladies and gentlemen sitting on the balcony from their chairs.
After all, these genre pioneers confirmed the well-known fact that music brings people of all ages together in Prague. Already during the first song, the artists were able to turn the Lucerna Music Hall into one big dance floor in the midst of a chilly autumn evening. Although the entire performance of De La Soul lasted less than an hour, it was not an unforgettable experience not only for fans of these legends, and many people from the audience were humming the familiar tunes on their way home.
The golden nineties
The American hip hop trio De La Soul was founded in 1987 in the Amityville area of Long Island, New York. The tree friends created the band in high school, soon attracting the attention of producer Prince Paul. Their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was called a "hip hop masterpiece" and literally propelled the band to the sky - mainly thanks to highly positive critic reviews. The single from the album “Me, myself and I”, which garnered much enthusiasm after its presentation at Lucerna, had become a huge hit and the band had enjoyed tremendous success with it in the 1990s.
In addition to a number of artists such as Snoop Dogg and The Cake, De La Soul also collaborated with the British band Gorillaz. The boys participated in one of the biggest hits from 2005 “Feel Good Inc.” In the US, their album containing this famous song became double-platinum. It also earned five Grammy nominations and turned one into a victory.
